World Contraception Day 2023

People standing on a globe holding packs of birth control pills with a speech bubble that reads, "US is almost here!"

World Contraception Day, celebrated every September 26 since 2007, commemorates the importance of contraception globally. And this year will be more exciting than ever, as we have the opportunity to celebrate the FDA’s recent approval of Opill, the first-ever over-the-counter (OTC) birth control pill in the United States. This landmark achievement for reproductive health would not have been possible without the nearly two decades of work by members of the Free the Pill coalition—a group of more than 200 researchers, advocates, and providers committed to ensuring more equitable access to contraception—and the supportive public testimony during the FDA’s joint advisory committee meeting.

We hope you’ll join us on September 26 to elevate our movement to increase equitable access to birth control pills in the United States, spread the word about this achievement, and double down on helping ensure OTC birth control pills are priced affordably AND fully covered by insurance. Here’s how you can participate:

  • Post on social media throughout the day using #FreeThePill and #WorldContraceptionDay, and reshare content from Free the Pill’s platforms (and click to engage with our messages below!)

  • Join our Tweetstorm from 2-3pm ET/11am-12pm PT to raise awareness about Opill being on the shelf in early 2024, and call for an affordable retail price and insurance coverage

  • Tell the Biden Administration that over-the-counter birth control pills should be covered by insurance—click here to take action and join our digital letter-writing campaign

  • Donate to support our work to ensure OTC birth control pills are affordably priced, fully covered by insurance, and available right on the shelf at your local drugstore
